LA is the Green Jobs Capital
Los Angeles has more green jobs than any region in the US, and they are expected to double that number the next 30 years. The Californians for Clean Energy and Jobs Network released a report showing that the number of green jobs in LA is likely to reach 433,000 by 2040. The study also shows that the green job sector has grown three times as fast as the rest of the region’s economy in the last 15 years. It now accounts for about 178,500 out of about 4.5 million workers employed in LA. This is only about 4.5 percent of total private sector employment, but still more than ten times more than those in petroleum and coal products production. The report also shows that green jobs, with their higher skills requirements, pay workers a 50 – 100 percent premium over average jobs. Students clean and stack their trays, which are then collected and delivered by P&R Paper to Dart Paper Corporation for reprocessing into items like picture frames and interior moulding. Dart and P&R are heading up the program. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, every school lunch produces about 67 pounds of trash a year, translating to 40,000 pounds of lunch waste a year from an average-sized middle school.
